Dream Worship Service

100_5241 Those of you who've read me a long time know my faith is what drives me. I don't always talk about it- but I suspect the next couple of blogs will be for my Christian brothers and sisters who've been bugging me with their behavior lately. (So if you're anti- faith, it's ok if you don't visit for a bit. I understand. We Christians aren't very likable sometimes! I apologize for that.)

Recently, when I posted a link to Jaeson Ma's Love song/sermon, someone I went to college with said that they would never show a clip of it at her church. That made me furious, very sad, and contemplative- all at the same time. Was there really no place in her Church for the message of love when it sounded different from their usual hymns? I've sat through many worship services that weren't designed for me and I began thinking... what would the perfect worship sound like if there was one created for me and not for the people who'd be offended by Jaeson Ma's sound and who are too stubborn to hear his message.

So from someone who was in a Church service less than a week after she was born......

This is my Dream Worship Service…

Enter loudly.

Hug the person next to you.

Stand up and move...

We're worshipping here today!

Prelude-

the time when we leave the world behind

Know God is God

“Made to Love”

Toby Mac

Let's begin by focusing why we are actually in worship today.

Why we are here instead doing something else- anything else!

Toby reminds us that we have an eternal purpose- to love God and to be loved by him.

The Gathering

Call to Worship- We gather together as a body to worship,

join us with a heart longing for purity and love

 God Is Majestic

“Amazing”

Saylah

Saylah tells us that God is amazing and worthy of our worship.

Hymn of Faith- I Believe

“Ru Guo” (If)

Van Ness Wu

(Ok- so this isn't the video I'd choose for this song- nor is it the one Van Ness would choose, I suspect, but it's the only copy I can find on youtube)

Still... in the quietness, let's think about opening ourselves to the leading of the Holy Spirit-

only he can break down the barriers inside us.

The Word

Encountering Love through the Word

“Love”

Jaeson Ma

a sermon that changes you inside out... do you have love?

Responding to Love

“Lord I Give You My Heart”

Van Ness Wu

And how do we respond to the fact that such love can change us forever?

With the only gift we have, we return our heart to its owner.

The Changed Heart

Confession - I Have Stumbled Again

“Rescue”

Acappella

I am not worthy of your love. I sin so many times, in so many different ways.

Yet, you continue to rescue me, to show me love in action.

Communion - Convict my heart and help me purify it, Lord.

“Lose The Soul”

Toby Mac

We have choices in life, but we're called to do those things that glorify God and not ourselves.

Hymn of Hope and Forgiveness

“We’re Still Standing”

K-Drama

No matter how many times we fall down, we have hope in the forgiveness of God.

We're still standing -not because our own strength, but because God is holding us up!

Praise of Thanksgiving

"Christ In My Flow"

Saylah

No room for compromise.

Christ flows through your blood and is present in all  your actions.

The Sending

Acts of Commitment- so? Did you hear God today? Whatcha' gonna do about that?

"Who Is Gonna Tell the Child?"

Acappella

The Blessing- Let's leave the house feeling soooo.... fly....

“Feeling So Fly”

Toby Mac

Are you feeling so fly now?

Thank you for letting me indulge a little in my personal worship dreams... someday... in heaven!

Ps. Toby Mac's original MV's can't be embedded, so you might want to go search for them on youtube!

WOW! That is one fantastic (and long) sermon. And EXTREMELY interactive. I find in my spiritual practice that worship (in whatever form) isn't interactive enough. And I would suspect that is true for a lot of faiths. People blah, blah, blah at us and we listen respectfully (most of the time), sing (or in my case chant), then socialize. The learning and continuance of learning (no matter what it is, in my opinion) needs to be interactive.

@CanadianNational - worship only changes one when one interacts with it on a personal level. otherwise it becomes an empty rite, a ritual, a bad habit. when there isn't room in your worship for interaction, then you are shutting the door to changing hearts. i used the traditional anglo worship pattern for this bc it is one many ppl are familiar with. of course it isn't the only worship pattern! (not that some ppl remember that!) thanks for responding! :) i appreciate it and your insight!

Singing at church is my favorite part. Coming from a Catholic background, I gain a lot of strength from the ritual... but that's because, unlike some Catholics, I am blessed to have been taught the reasons behind some of the rituals. I don't know if Catechism is taught by kind, passionate people anymore. I lucked out. Growing up Catholic in the 80s, I have a specific perspective on music in church. Once in a while we'd have an acoustic guitar, but we usually sang very simple, very joyful praise songs, accompanied by the piano, that anyone could learn in a chorus or two.
Sing praises. Love your neighbors. Establish community. Challenge yourself to let God make you stronger. Sounds good to me.

@BoureeMusique - sometimes i like the music. sometimes the bad theology makes me laugh, and then i get mad, and then i wanna cry... and sometimes it plain hurts my ears and my heart... and sometimes i wonder if anyone really believes the words they're saying... and sometimes, i can't say the words bc i'm not ready to do them... where we're going now, i tend to not have trouble with the words but i don't always connect to the music. (and i don't hold that against them since my taste is a bit -ok, a lot- more radical than most!) :) i don't mind rituals if they have content behind them and are meaningful. i want to be moved, be challenged, be changed- not asking much am i??? :)

Ahhh.. beautiful post.. it is not hard to fathom why this is your dream worship...

During my church-going days, I attended two different churches. One was protestant.. we sung acoustics, hymns in a solemn and formal environment. The other was ... do you call it modern? Hill songs with lots of electical guitar and keyboard.. Both didnt really make an impact on me, perhaps of the crowd, then. It was during my cell group worship that I felt "touched" and alive....

I will have to come back and listen to the rest of the clips. I wish that I could remember who sings that "Jesus would not be welcomed in my church" but it does seem as if churches have become very snobish and not willing to let too many with in it's walls who don't fit the image that church has for itself. I love my church for being just the opposite. Thanks for the reminder.

God is a wonderful companion, and god is god, who knows if he is listening?

.....

I like that song "I Will Promise You", I do hope A.N. Jell become a real group. The four of them can really sing and they have talents. I think if they want it, they can make it.

@Yiu_Kwok - that song is beautiful. are you watching their series then? i've not started yet, but it's on my list. and the one thing i know for sure about God is that he always listens. he may not do as we wish we would, but he always listens... it's just the way he is.....

@jerjonji - Yeah, I'm watching the episodes with rough translation at Youtube. It's got subtitles in simplify Chinese, I can only read traditional Chinese. Sometimes I can lose sections of dialogues without fully comprehending everything. So far, I had only seen eleven episodes, and I do like it. I hope you get to it, the story is very mangaish.

@persephone_winter - i've attended all kinds of worship services- high church, pentacostal, black revival, contemporary, and i've seen God in all of them- so my personal worship style is just that- very personal. the relational part is the most important part of any service- human-human, human-God, human-Spirit... at least that's what i've learned on this journey! :)

@Yiu_Kwok - i'm off to watch it on viikii with english subs. i can understand about 40% of spoken chinese if they don't speak fast - or have an odd accent, but i can still only read about 200-300 characters (simplified!). i don't currently have a chinese teacher so i can barely speak it- my last teacher claimed i sounded american and told me to never order orange juice in chinese! i like the story idea- it's not from a manga? so many twdramas are. wish i could find a translator- bc i know i could write for taiwanese tv! i know it! :) i have this cutting edge story right now that would be the perfect new idol drama- and a really fun one that i started for thai tv b4 my thai partner got too busy to write with me....  a bit sick of adaptations, and the same old storyline. so predictable a lot of the time. sigh! i really was born in the wrong place, i suspect!

I like idol drama, they are less heavy than serious writing. There is a rather good story I like to recommand, you might had seen it, the title is 白い巨塔 (白色巨塔--The Ivory Tower). It's based on a Japanese novel from the 60's. If you get the chance, see the Japanese version from the 2003 remake. It says a lot about human nature, ambition, strive, a general truth about society and our roles in it.

...

On manga, I think one day I'm going to pick up the pen and write a story, and most likely will draw it too. I want to do more living before I jump back in to say the things that I believe in.

Dear Jeri,

Just checking in my subs. I'm at work, and have the speakers off, but I think I get the jist of your post, whithout sampling the "hymns". I think one of my favorite church services was attending church with one of my workmates from FedMart back in the 70s. He was a black guy, and the church was one of those rollicking gospel affairs. I was Pentecostal, so I was used to "holy rolling", but the sheer energy of the choir and the congregation really got me going.

I haven't attended church in a long time (I've written about the reasons many times on my own blog and won't get into it here.) However, in the Pentecostal church I attended in the mid 70s, there was a lot of "Christian Rock and Roll" concerts, so besides the more traditional Baptist hymns I remember from my youth, I've also enjoyed more "modern" types of music.

Nothing compares, however with a black gospel service. The "glory" of God is really appreciated and celebrated.

Wow...I’m really glad you posted this (sorry it took a while for me to get around to reading). I feel worship becomes diluted in a lot of churches, where the singers and musicians are more glorified than God. It’s about true worship—of God—that a lot of churches (especially these megachurches with their elaborate programs) sometimes lose sight of.

@athanasius2k4 - at least mega churches will try new things- unlike the tiny self-righteous ones... i'd be happy to encounter God in Action once in a while tho!
