Ninja Assassin...

ninjaassassinteaser

Rainism hits again!

Coming November 25th...

Who's coming with me?

How many seats should I save?

If I were in Seoul on the 10th of this month, I'd have the hard choice of seeing him or the rest of the Kpop performers

(Big Bang, Super Junior, SHINee, Jewelry, KARA, 2ne1, 4Minute, SNSD, T-Ara, Wheesung, Park Hyo Shin, MC Mong and Chae Yeon) in a Dream Concert.

Of course, I'd see him first! I'd love to see him live someday. His concerts are always amazing.

(It'd be a harder decision if Shinhwa was performing... but only bc Shinhwa was my gateway into Kpop!)

Wonder who made a mistake and scheduled two concerts for the same night?

Anyway... have been waiting for this movie for months now... months and months! The teasers look great for it.

I'm pretty sure the Dream Concert performers would win, because if you just combined the Big Bang + Super Junior + SHINee + SNSD fanbase, it's already pretty crazy even without the others thrown in. Besides, there's the weird thing about Rain being somehow less popular in his own country than you would expect, given that his face was on Korea Airlines and he's supposed to be the most well-known K-entertainment export, officially anyway.

I've heard good things about Ninja Assassin and the trailer is interesting, although the title still makes me want to cry. By definition, 'ninja' covers the role of 'assassin' so... Anyway, the storyline reminds me of Lian Hearn's Across the Nightingale Floor (Tales of the Otori) with the whole idea of the ruthless secret society training orphans in espionage and assassination. I'd recommend the book if you're interested in that kind of thing :)

Actually, I guess you can just wait until the movie comes out. Apparently film rights were sold before the first book was published to Universal Studios and the script is in development.

@BLoodRedRosez - i've seen the behind the scenes to this and it looks great. the name is terrible- for the reasons you mention and bc it's tired. plus why does william morris think that they need to turn a pop star into jet li to sell him to america? why???? but they do- i've heard them call him the "next jet li" and he's spent hours training for this role. do you think they scheduled the dream concert for the same date on purpose? i would still go see rain first- because i've missed him at madison sq at least twice and he remains my favorite korean star... the other groups would be fun and exciting to see, but i'm dying to see a rain concert live!

@jerjonji -

Well, I tried to go see a Rain concert and the hype was all there - they even put him on the front cover of the L.A. Times' Calendar - and of course, we all know that that one got canceled :( I doubt they scheduled the concerts on the same day on purpose, but I'm pretty sure the Dream Concert schedulers weren't all that concerned, given that SO MANY people go to the Dream Concert. The weird thing is that on the official website, they have TVXQ listed and are using their pictures in the promos...despite the whole lawsuit business. I would've thought they would be promoting Big Bang or something to avoid giving the wrong impression, but I guess they're trying to draw a more international market.

I can't believe they're calling Rain the "next Jet Li." Or, I can believe it, but it's a horrified belief, because I'm so incredibly sick of how everything outside of the U.S. has to be "the next" or "the -insert ethnicity- -insert American celebrity name-" You know, the way Rain is the Korean Usher, SE7EN is the Korean Justin Timberlake, BoA is the Korean Britney, Lim Jeong Hee is Beyonce/Alicia Keys, and to top it off, 2 PM just became "the Korean Jonas Brothers." (No kidding. That last one just absolutely killed me.) I could go on and on...and the sad thing is, the Korean media and the entertainment companies buy into it to some extent too and adopt it for promotion purposes. I just hope that what happened to Se7en doesn't happen to Rain. I had a bad feeling when I saw that they completely "remade" Se7en with the new wannabe gangster look, hair cut, etc. like they were trying to Americanize him. Now his career's in limbo and even if he were to go back to Korea, the next generation has started to take over.

I can see why they might think the "Jet Li" brand is a good marketing strategy - did you know that for Hero, they originally were going to title it "Jet Li's Hero" just because they were afraid it wouldn't sell without his name up front - but the comparison here is even worse than usual. Jet Li trained and competed for years and, let's face it, that's how he got respect when he started transitioning to Hollywood and had horrible Engrish. Not quite on Rain's "I control my mind with chicken breasts" level, but people were even less forgiving back them. You can't just drop someone into a movie role, have them train for hours and hours, and expect them to ride on someone else's fame. Worse of all, even if he becomes "the next Jet Li" like they want him to be, he'll just be typecast as a martial arts actor, which I guess is kind of the point in terms of marketing since Jet Li's not intending to make any more martial arts epics.

@BLoodRedRosez - i agree 100%. when i hear william morris had signed Rain, i had great hopes, but since then, all they've done is cast him in Speed Racer and now Ninja Assassin... it's like they can't see his talent for what it is or don't think we can see his talent for what it is. i had even bigger hopes for Se7en but was worried about the costs for him and his career and it looks like those worries were justified as well. i really want Asian media to become more mainstream here (for purely selfish reasons, i admit) and i think daniel wu was right when he talked about the hidden racism in hollywood and how even our very best who stay here aren't given the calliber of work that they would get if they went to Asia... and it makes me a little ill and a lot mad. i don't want Rain to be the next jet li... i want him to be Rain... talented, dedicated, hard working, and serious... and entertaining- with good management that knows how to hold a concert w/o disappointing fans, and who know how to market him as RAIN to the states!!! Rain has been working hard to keep his career alive in Asia while doing movies here and i know he's gotten a ton of flack about it. but at least he's trying! and wm is the best... now if they can just be the best for HIM! :)

Just dropping in to say hello. Will go if the movie comes anywhere near me, but I'll probably be seeing it on DVD.

I'm not sure if we are scheduled for this movie yet... I saw the preview a while back and meant to ask if you knew about it or not. I think it looks pretty cool... better than another Edison movie!
