Books for Baby....

I've been carefully sifting through all the poorly written crap that is out there for kids to find the best used books for the new grandbaby. You need to start reading aloud to her in the third trimester because research shows that they retain some of what they hear. So I don't want him to hear junky literature before he's born ... thus the great book hunt.

It's amazing how many of my favorite books are board books now- so durable and lasting, even for the kid who learns to read by eating the words. I have most of the classics in good shape and am starting a second set- one for her house and one for ours!

In the meantime, someone asked me what to buy a 2 year old.

This is my list of my early childhood favorites- the ones every kid should have memorized!

1. Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown

2. The Very Hungry Caterpiller by Eric Carle

3. Guess How Much I Love You by Sam McBratney

4. Love You Forever by Robert Munsch

5. Brown Bear, Brown Bear by Eric Carle (ok- all the Eric Carle books)

6. 10 Black Dots by Donald Crew

7. School Bus by Donald Crew

8. Truck by Donald Crew (See above note about Eric Carle- it applies here too)

9. Harold and the Purple Crayon by Crockett Johnson

10. No David! by David Shannon

11. Everyone Poops by Taro Gomi

12. 1 Fish, 2 Fish by Dr. Seuss

13. Go, Dog, Go by P.D. Eastman

14. Chicka Chicka Boom Boom! (Best ABC book ever!)

15. Good Night Gorilla by Peggy Rathman

16. Stellaluna by Janell Cannon

17. Curious George by H. A. Rey (any of them!)

18. If You Give A Mouse A Cookie by Laura Joffies Numeroff (you'll want the sequels next!)

19. Sheep In a Jeep by Nancy Shaw

20. On the Night You Were Born by Nancy Tillman

And our favorite book when the kid was growing up... we went through several copies as we fought over turning the next page, giggling hysterically every time as if we didn't know the ending...

21. The Monster at the End of The Book by Jon Stone

Would you add anything to this list?

Edit: Add the following books to this list to make it nearly complete! Can't believe I left off the Jimmy Liao- those books are on my Amazon list waiting for payday... they should be the new kiddy lit classics!

22.  Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak

23. Caps For Sale by Esphyr Slobodkina

24. When the Moon Forgot by Jimmy Liao

25. The Sound of Color by Jimmy Liao

26. A Whistle for Willie by Ezra Jack Keats (any Ezra Jack Keats are perfect!)

A great list.  My son is nineteen, but most of these books still sit on a bookshelf in the basement.  And you're so right about Chicka Chicka Boom Boom.  Two more books come to mind that I would have to add to the list.  Dogs in Space by Nancy Coffelt.  And I have a Chinese picture book edition of Monkey with full-page color illustrations.  It was quite possibly my son's favorite.

@doahsdeer - both of those sound like gems! i'll have to look for them. i don't know what happened to my kid's books. he has his favorite from his teen years, but i suspect we gave away his baby books- or i took them to school- commonly referred to around here as the black hole from which things never return! :)

I'm proud to remember over half of those books! My mother recommends Richard Scarrey. The Monster at the End of This Book used to scare the crap out of me! What fun! I don't know about two year old literature, but I've been working on my 6-9 range a bit.

@BoureeMusique - children either love or hate scarrey- for some the pages are too busy, for others it's a great puzzle. i'm going to have to buy the monster book new since all the used ones are very USED! i'll worry about the 6-9 range next. i have a great collection of multicultural books for that age group, but i'm gonna need copies a kid can read and love!

Nooooo, not Love You Forever!  Too sad, too sad...if it is the one I am thinking about...

All the Dr. Suess books are so good for their rhythm, even at a young age.  You know, I don't think I have read all of these; some of them I have SEEN, though, as I stock the shelves.  : )

@suzyQ_darnit - love you forever- the stages of life from helplessness to helpless- the only difference is the caretaker and the power of love that helps you at all times... powerful book! so it's probably the book you're thinking about- it could be sad, but you have to love the fact that love isn't cheap in this story. it costs you something, but it keeps you going when times are tough! a little kid is reassured by the fact that his mommy will love him forever, while mommy is reassured that the love she gives this child will be redeemed!

Monster at the End of this Book was one of my all-time favorites. I'm also a Scarrey fan. Where the Wild Things Are and Caps for Sale are two that I wouldn't leave off of any list. Anything (anything!) by Eric Carle.

@buddha_gazelle - i love both of those books for 5 and up which is why i excluded them from this list- but caps for sale is so much to act out- makes the whole story unforgettable! :)

What the fudge, why not? Play Mozart while they're in womb. Read Lowry when they're two.

The kids wouldn't let me pass many of them on, so most are in a box in the garage for their kids, I guess. hahaha

Where the Wild Things Are . . . I would read it to my little Wild Thing and use his name in place of Max. Together we would roar our terrible roars, roll our terrible eyes, and gnash our terrible teeth. It's classic!

Yes, you're right-- I've had success using those books with four-year-olds, but two is a little young.

You have to find The Emperor and the Kite! My kids here love it. It's a Chinese book, but translated into English. And as for Turn Left, Turn Right (off topic a little), the actual Chinese name is Turn Left, Turn Right, that whole Cloudy With a Chance of Sunshine is because some stupid foreigner didn't understand the idea behind Left and Right... morons!!!

And The Sneetches... it's the greatest lesson a child can learn. I'm trying to find the reding list for ach week for my kindergarten. I read them so many that I forget them all. Also, look for anything by Berkley Breathed (maybe the wrong spelling). He was the genius behind Bloom County with Opus and Bill the Cat. He has done quite a few children's books. I absolutely love The Wish for Wings that Work. Okay, I just looked him up...

www.berkleybreathed.com

Flawed Dogs is great, Edward Fudwupper Fibbed Big is hilarious and you can't go wrong with his take on Goodnight Moon, titled Goodnight Opus (I have all these back home in Canada and need to bring them here for my kids!!!
